Moon Destruction

I apologise if this has been asked before, but what happens to your moving fleet from your Moon if your Moon gets destroyed before the fleet returns? 
I tried a transport mission from a colony then abandoned it when the fleet was returning. On the overview the return fleet mission still shows as if the planet is still there. I tried probing the destroyed planet and my fleet is still there.
The destroyed planet disappeared before I thought of attacking it.
But that was a long time ago. Things might have changed.
